Usain Bolt blamed a bad start for the fact he came third in his last ever 100m race last night.

The eight-time Olympic gold medal winner lost out to American Justin Gatlin and Christian Coleman at the World Championships last night, in a race he was highly-tipped to win.

On Friday night, after winning the heats, he had complained about the starting blocks. However, following last night’s defeat, he laid the blame on himself.

He told the BBC: “The start is killing me. Normally I get better though the rounds.

“It felt like it was there but the reason I lost was because I couldn’t get it. You have to transition.

“I didn’t get the transition right and tightened at the end which you should never do.

“I ran shoes in warm up and I felt smooth but I didn’t execute when it matters.

“These aren’t the best blocks. I was not fully comfortable with them. But you have to work with what you have.”

Usain Bolt will say farewell to athletics next Saturday after taking part in the 4x100m relay race. Last night was the Jamaican’s last ever individual race, making his defeat even harder to take.

Gold-medal winner Gatlin came in for a bit of a rough treatment from the crowd at the London Stadium who booed him throughout the whole night.

Gatlin, who has served two bans for doping earlier in his career, was booed at during the heats, as well as before last night’s race and even after he came in first place.

In a show of classy sportsmanship, Bolt approached the American to congratulate him, following the race.

Gatlin told the BBC: “The first thing he said to me was ‘congratulations, you worked hard for this’.”

“And he said ‘you don’t deserve these boos’ and I thanked him for that. I thanked him for inspiring me throughout my career. He’s an amazing man.”
