This Chinese Airline Now Has Haute Couture Uniforms

Chinese Airline

A Chinese airline is taking their uniforms to international, haute couture heights.
Hainan Airlines debuted their new uniforms at Paris Couture Week on Tuesday.

Designed by Laurence Xu, the uniforms are inspired by the Cheongsam, a traditional Chinese dress that women usually wear for more formal occasions. However the dress was updated with Western-style draping for an international, modern look.

The uniforms feature traditional Chinese imagery, such as clouds, waves and the roc, a mythical bird of prey. The jackets and coats that female employees will wear over the dresses feature a structured mandarin collar and crisp tailoring that looks taken straight from Savile Row.

Xu is a Chinese-born designer who regularly shows at Haute Couture week in Paris.

“During the design process, Hainan Airlines and Laurence Xu met and talked frequently, going through more than 1,000 design blueprints and trying out more than one hundred samples of garments and accessories,” according to a statement from the airline.

The entire design process for Chinese Airlines took over two years.

The final design reflects the airline’s traditional gray color palate while paying homage to the Chinese culture. The last uniform redesign was issued in 2010 and featured a knee-length solid gray dress and red striped scarf.

This is the fifth new iteration of the uniform since the airline launched in 1993.
